Learning a foreign language is much more than just recalling endless lists of words. In today's world, it is both a window providing a view to other places, peoples, and cultures, and a door that can lead you to become part of the global community.
Our foreign language faculty strives to deliver a comprehensive perspective on language that encourages a broad understanding of the cultural, historical, and geographical aspects of which comprise the various regions where the languages we teach are spoken.
Many students in the United States ask, "Why is it important to study a foreign language, since I already speak a global language?" The advantages gained by students through the study of a foreign language are numerous and go beyond the communication aspect. At the academic level, studying a foreign language increases a student's cognitive awareness and strengthens his/her critical thinking abilities.
Also, learning a foreign language allows students to learn more about other cultures and the unique perspectives of the world that these other cultures may hold. As students understand more about foreign cultures, they, too, begin to see the world through different eyes. Ironically, learning about a foreign culture not only broadens one's horizon in terms of world views, but it also allows one to gain a better understanding of their own native culture and language.
From a professional standpoint, a student who is able to speak a foreign language at an intermediate to high level proficiency will undoubtedly have a competitive edge in an increasingly global work force and markets.
