2012 Marching Trumpet Auditions July, 2012 Dear Henderson Trumpeters, We are excited to have both our new and returning trumpet players in the band this fall! We're already excited to see what this section can do! The first thing you will do after you arrive on campus is audition for parts. This is to give everyone a fair chance at first part and to make certain that the section is well balanced from top to bottom. These auditions are very important -- many decisions are based on the result of these tryouts, including which teacher you study with, which concert band you play in, who we recommend for paying gigs, etc. Please prepare to the best of your ability so that you will represent yourself fairly. You will play many hours during your first few days at Henderson -- you need to be in shape before you get here! For you freshman, these first few days can hit your mouth like a ton of bricks! The Henderson trumpeters play really well and really hard -- you will want to be able to keep up. Auditions will be held Monday, August 13, beginning at 9:00 A.M. (Audition times are listed on the link below.) Auditions will be in Russell Fine Arts 205 (turn right after you get off the elevator on the second floor). You may check into the dorm before or after your audition, but please give yourself adequate time to warm up, and please be on time! Your judges will be Mr. Laubach and Dr. Buckner. The audition will consist of the enclosed music and sight reading. Scales will count 10%, prepared music will count 80%, and sight reading will count 10%. Please observe metronome markings. Also, be careful with slurs, dynamics, etc. You may lower notes an octave if they are too high; however, you lose points. Prepare all 12 major scales from memory -- we will pick one of them. Scales up to high C should be 2 octaves, but only 1 octave if it takes you above high C. Also, prepare the chromatic scale for your full range. Freshmen trumpet majors, if you have the Arban Complete Method or the Clarke Technical Studies, please bring them. If you don't have them, they will be available in the Bookstore. You will also need a metronome. We hope you are enjoying your summer -- see you soon! Dr. Jim
